This just went across the block at Barrett Jackson! Legally imported to the U.S. and is fully street legal. Sold for $30k. I’m dumbfounded and extremely jealous.

I saw one in Metro Detroit last summer and was totally jealous.

Still cheaper than the upcoming RS. And much more rare (at least in the U.S.). Nothing against the new RS by any means, but I've lusted after this car ever since it came out.

I was watching that too. My roommate was like; “what?! $30 k for a focus?!” I then explained to him why lol. Although I wouldn’t ever pay that much.

There’s a long thread on this over at focusst.org. Apparently, this is “legal” only in the sense that it has a clear title and a valid registration, but nothing at all was done to satisfy federal regulations. So, legal as far as state authorities are concerned, but the feds still consider it contraband.

And questionably legal.

Considering its rarity in the U.S. USD$31,000 (GBP£20,000) is probably the lowest of what they’re selling for over here in the U.K..

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/us…

There are about 30 for sale on Pistonheads alone.

I think amongst the other sites there is around 40-50 for sale in the U.K. almost all going for more than this one went for, including the Mk1 Focus RS s.

Damn you all to blast: There is a 2010 2.5 RS at a Ford dealership near me for £23,000 with 32,000 miles on the clock.

It’s running Mexico plates. It’s apparently been running Mexico plates since 2010. I don’t think it’s actually federally-legal or even state-legal.

Can someone give a brief summary of how this is in the USA legally?

This is downright strange to me. I remember hearing the Mexico connection, but I never knew that it was flat-out illegal.

How is the auction company not liable in some way for auctioning what is effectively contraband? Do they just make all bidders sign an indemnifying agreement or whatever it’s called, so that way the it’s the purchaser’s problem, not the auctioner’s? I’m surprised that’s legal. It’s not like a car dealership in the US could import a bunch of grey-market cars from this year and then just sell them.

The car isn’t illegal per se, just illegal for use on public roads and highways. If you had a big enough property with a private road system, you could drive it there, or on a racetrack. Or you could park it in your living room as a stationary decoration. I believe there is at least one Volkswagen dealer here that uses an Ultima Edicion Beetle as a permanent showroom ornament.

PS: I got one too - only smaller.

Awesome diecast! And they are very rare, a.k.a nonexistent here in the U.S. They were never sold here are they’re not technically legal to import either. This seller somehow managed to get this one in to the country by driving it across the border from Mexico. So this is the only one in the entire country, making it extremely rare here.
